Data Destruction

Data gone for good.
Certified, not hopeful.

Retiring old hardware without securely wiping it is one of the most overlooked data breach risks for Australian businesses. We provide certified data destruction for end-of-life devices, with documentation to satisfy Privacy Act and compliance obligations.

Secure Data Erasure and Device Disposal

Deleting files or formatting a drive does not remove the data. It removes the pointer to the data. The underlying information stays on the drive and can be recovered with readily available software. This applies to laptops, desktops, servers, and mobile devices.

When a business retires hardware through resale, donation, lease return, or disposal, any device that held business data needs to be handled carefully. A device leaving the building with recoverable data on it is a potential notifiable data breach under the Australian Privacy Act.

🏛️ NIST 800-88
Internationally recognised erasure standard verifiable, documented, auditable.
📄 100% Certified
Every device receives a certificate of erasure with full chain of custody.
🗑️ Zero Recoverable
Certified erasure leaves no recoverable data regardless of media type.
What We Cover

Erasure, compliance, and disposal

⚠️ The risk of skipping this step

Most data breaches involving retired hardware are not sophisticated attacks. They are ordinary recoveries of data that was never properly removed. A second-hand laptop sold without proper erasure or a lease return processed without wiping. These are the scenarios that create real exposure.

Under the Australian Privacy Act, organisations holding personal information must take reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify it when it is no longer needed. Deleting files or reformatting a drive does not meet that standard.

✅ What we cover

  • Secure erasure for laptops, desktops, and workstations
  • Server and NAS device data destruction
  • SSD, HDD, and hybrid drive erasure
  • Mobile device and tablet wipe and factory reset to enterprise standard
  • Certificate of erasure issued for every device processed
  • Asset register documentation serial numbers, device type, erasure date
  • Chain of custody records where required
  • Physical destruction for drives that cannot be overwritten

📋 Erasure standards and compliance

We use certified software-based erasure that meets internationally recognised data destruction standards, including NIST 800-88 and DoD 5220.22-M. These standards specify the methods, verification requirements, and documentation that must be produced to demonstrate compliant erasure.

  • NIST SP 800-88 compliant erasure methods
  • Full verification pass confirming no recoverable data remains
  • Tamper-evident certificate of erasure per device
  • Suitable for Privacy Act compliance documentation
  • Accepted by cyber insurers as evidence of responsible data handling

♻️ E-waste and secure disposal

After erasure, devices that cannot be reused or returned need to be disposed of responsibly. We arrange collection and disposal through certified e-waste partners who process equipment in accordance with Australian environmental requirements.

  • Collection and transport arranged on your behalf
  • Processing through accredited Australian e-waste partners
  • Secure disposal certificate issued per device or batch
  • Compliant with national television and computer recycling scheme requirements
  • Full documentation trail from device retirement to final disposal
When to Use It

Common scenarios requiring secure erasure

Secure erasure is not just for businesses with obvious data obligations. Any device that has been used in a business context holds data that should not be recoverable by whoever ends up with the device next.

📤 End of lease returns to hardware suppliers
👤 Staff offboarding where devices are reassigned or retired
💻 Hardware sold or donated to staff or third parties
🔄 Device refresh programs old fleet replaced with new
🏥 Regulated industries disposing of devices with client data
📦 Devices returned after a cloud migration removes on-premises systems
